What's happening?

No sooner had the Detroit Lions hammered the Green Bay Packers (lol) to close out the season 9-7, they fired head coach Jim Caldwell.

The Lions had been in contention for a possible wildcard spot after finishing behind the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC North, before a bad loss at Cincinnati in Week 16 ended their hopes.

It's one of several head coach changes announced on "Black Monday," the day after the regular season ended, with Chicago Bears' John Fox also out.

Why should I, a Vikings fan, care?

Well because NFL.com's Tom Pelissero is reporting that the Lions want to speak to Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur to replace Caldwell.

Shurmur, the former head coach of the Cleveland Browns, arrived at the Vikings in January 2016 as the tight ends coach before taking over as OC when Norv Turner resigned in November of that year.

Should we be surprised?

Not really. The Vikings' vast improvement on offense this year, even dealing with the injuries to Sam Bradford and Dalvin Cook, has seen Shurmur's star rise.

Check around and Shurmur's being linked with plenty of head coach jobs, including for the Bengals and the Bears.

The performances of Case Keenum this year could make him an attractive prospect for any team with an underachieving quarterback.
