Local critics kick around 'Playing for Keeps'

This week's schedule for new films in theaters is light, as the Gerard Butler-Jessica Biel romantic comedy "Playing For Keeps" rolls out as the only major wide release.

"Playing for Keeps" stars Butler as a former soccer star who's fallen on hard times financially, is divorced, and in an attempt to put his life back together, begins to coach his young son's soccer team. Biel co-star as Butler's ex, while Catherine Zeta-Jones, Uma Thurman and Judy Greer co-star as soccer moms who swoon over the hunky soccer coach.

Colin Covert in the Star Tribune gives the film a lukewarm compliment, saying it's a "perfectly pleasant romantic comedy completely lacking in novelty." Yet, he adds, the film will still appeal to its core audience.

Chris Hewitt in his Pioneer Press review, however, shows "Playing for Keeps" no mercy. Taking a shot at Butler, Hewitt says the Scottish actor's "mailbox is where scripts rejected by Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Brad Pitt and Colin Farrell go to die."

Hewitt also sums up in his one out of four star review that the film is "contrived and phony from beginning to end."

Eric Henderson of also rips the movie, saying "it just plain loses" and goes on to list all the film's false preconceptions in one very, very long sentence.
