Louie Anderson says he did celebrity diving show to get healthier

Comedy star and St. Paul native Louie Anderson is about to be featured on the celebrity diving show "Splash" -- even though he previously never dived in his life, the Pioneer Press reports.

The show, which premieres on ABC March 19, stars the likes of Anderson, basketball legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Detroit Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, "Cosby Show" star Keshia Knight Pulliam and former Miss Alabama-turned-Internet sensation Katherine Webb.

Anderson told the Pioneer Press that he weighed more than 400 pounds he started training for the show, and he found the intensive training program and the chance to lose weight and get healthier appealing.

Although the 59-year-old comedian couldn't tell how much weight he lost -- that detail will be revealed on the show -- he wasn't afraid to make jokes at his own expense.

"I said I'd do it as long as I could be the fattest one," Anderson told the Pioneer Press. "I didn't want to dive against other fat divers -- that would be 'Emptying the Pool.'"

The goal of "Splash" is for the contestants to take a dive from a 10 meter platform -- which is about three stories high.

Anderson and his "Splash" co-stars are being coached for the diving competition by former Olympian Greg Louganis. Judging their dives are London Olympics U.S. Gold medalist David Boudia and Australian Olympic athlete and USA Dive Team director Steve Foley.
