Lyrics to Dylan's 'A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall' up for auction Tuesday

If you're the type to obsessively pore over Bob Dylan's lyrics and you happen to have about $303,000 in your pocket, the opportunity of a lifetime awaits you in London.

That's where Sotheby's – the famous auction house – is putting a "revised typescript" of Dylan's "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" on the block on Tuesday.

As Sotheby's tells it, the typed, two-page document – which includes jotted notes from the Minnesota-born music icon himself – was a "discarded" draft of the song's lyrics banged out on a typewriter in the office of Hugh Romney (aka hippie icon "Wavy Gravy") above the legendary Gaslight Folk Club in New York.

This "early working draft" of a "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" is an important artifact in music and pop culture history, the auctioner says, because it reveals "Dylan’s poetic ambitions as a songwriter" at that early stage in his career.

"Bob Dylan’s key works have invited debate" about their true meaning for decades, "but there is a consensus that ‘A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall’ represents the first full blossom of Dylan as poet," Sotheby's says.

The song was written in 1962 and debuted in 1963.

According to Reuters, another draft of the same lyrics was auctioned for $485,000 at a New York sale last year because they were fully handwritten, while the one being auctioned Tuesday is primarily typed.

Either dollar value is chump change compared to what the handwritten lyrics to "Like a Rolling Stone" sold for in 2014: over $2 million, the news service says.

Little wonder: the classic tune was named by Rolling Stone (the magazine) as "the Greatest Song of All Time," beating out 499 others on its epic 2011 list.
