'Mall Cop 2' going into production; could MOA be in running?

Now that the sequel to Kevin James' 2009 hit comedy "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" is moving forward, will the actor-screenwriter wheel his Segway over to the Mall of America?

The Hollywood Reporter said in an exclusive report Tuesday that filmmaker Andy Fickman ("Escape From Witch Mountain") is in talks to direct "Mall Cop 2," but the production didn't release any other details.

James, who will reprise the role of Paul Blart for the sequel, told me in an interview for KARE 11 in 2012 that he liked the idea of a "Mall Cop" sequel being set at the MOA.

"You have the best mall. The best mall in America," James said. "So it very possibly could be happening."

The MOA was the setting, of course, for Arnold Schwarzenegger’s holiday comedy “Jingle All the Way,” which was filmed on location at the mall in 1996.

"Mall Cop" studio Columbia Pictures confirmed the sequel was moving forward with both THR and the Hollywood blog The Wrap. THR said the production for "Mall Cop 2" could begin as early as April.

The Wrap said the first "Mall Cop" movie was shot in the South Shore Plaza in Massachusetts, but set in New Jersey.

James' credits also include "Here Comes the Boom," "Zookeeper" and the hit TV sitcom "King of Queens." He also starred with "Mall Cop" producer Adam Sandler in the comedies "Grown Ups" and "Grown Ups 2."
