Minnesota author learns her debut novel won prestigious Kirkus prize via Twitter

The way Lesley Nneka Arimah discovered she'd won the Kirkus award is great.

This is quite the way to kick off a literary career.

Lesley Nneka Arimah was named winner of the Kirkus Prize in fiction for her debut book What It Means When a Man Falls from the Sky Thursday.

Arimah, who is from the United Kingdom and currently lives in Minneapolis, will get $50,000 from Kirkus Reviews (the literary magazine behind the honor) as an award.

And she apparently found out by seeing Kirkus' tweet.

In follow-up tweets, Arimah said she was "honored," especially because judges had to make a choice "from an excellent (excellent!!) short list with some the best books I've read this year."

And she wasn't able to sleep after getting the news.

Winners were chosen by a selection of writers, booksellers, librarians and Kirkus critics.

What It Means When a Man Falls from the Sky is a collection of short stories, many set in Nigeria where Arimah spent some time growing up.

In its review of What It Means, NPR praised Arimah for her "electrifying, defiantly original writing," and described her as a "young author who seems certain to have a very bright literary future ahead of her."

Her next novel is reportedly (and tentatively) titled The Children of Bones.
