Minnesota classic car enthusiast revved up to see Jay Leno's vehicle collection

A classic car enthusiast from Oakdale is getting revved up to meet talk show host and fellow car collector Jay Leno, the Pioneer Press reports.

Al Hohenwald flew out Tuesday to Burbank, Calif., to see the TV talker's collection Thursday and attend the "The Tonight Show."

The trip was arranged by Hohenwald's sons, Mark and Paul, as a surprise gift for their dad's 80th birthday in April. Hohenwald owns nine classic cars himself, mostly Model As from 1930 and 1931.

Hohenwald, a former St. Paul Police officer and founder of the Spartan Promotional Group in Oakdale, tells the Pioneer Press that seeing Leno's extensive car collection is his "ultimate dream."

The tour was arranged through a series of phone calls to contacts, which ended with a mechanic in Nebraska who fixes motorcycles for Leno.

As it turns out, Leno had just contacted the mechanic with an invitation to get a group together for a private tour, and Hohenwald will be part of that group.

Mark Hohenwald says Leno's collection consists of "hundreds and hundreds" of vehicles, which are housed in three airplane hangars at the Burbank Airport.
