Minnesota cities don't feature in 'Top 50 Best Places to Live'

Not cool, Money magazine, not cool.

Minnesota has enjoyed regular appearances towards the top of Money's "Best Places to Live" rankings of the U.S., but that's ended this year.

There wasn't a single Minnesota city featured in the top 50 of the magazine's annual rankings, quite the snub for a state that's had several top 10 spots in recent years.

In the 2017 list, you have to scroll down all the way to No. 61 for the first Minnesota entry – with Eagan considered the best place to live in the state.

It's followed by Woodbury (67th), Burnsville (84th), and Minnetonka (85th).

It marks quite a change from Minnesota's involvement in the list over the past few years, such as the 2016 list when Eden Prairie finished 2nd, and Woodbury 11th.

In 2015, Chanhassen finished 7th, with Rosemount and Edina following in 12th and 15th respectively, while in 2014 Maple Grove featured at No. 2, Eagan No. 11 and Woodbury No. 12.

The Money list is based on a wide range of factors and involves some genuine, in-depth research as they separate the wheat from the chaff of U.S. cities sized between 10,000 and 100,000 inhabitants.

Perhaps one of the reasons that Twin Cities suburbs haven't scored quite as highly as this year is that one of the categories Money takes into account is housing affordability.

House prices in the Twin Cities hit a record high this past July, with the median sale price topping $259,000, the Business Journal reported, as buyers struggled to find bargains in a market where housing supply is extremely tight.

Other areas the Money study looked at include local economy (ie. unemployment, job growth), the cost of living, quality of education, crime levels, amenities and "ease of living" (commute times, weather etc.).
