Minnesota may get another TV series with the crime drama 'Minnesota'

Coming soon to your TV: another Minnesota-based crime drama ... whose title isn't the name of a city in an entirely different state.

In fact, it's called "Minnesota," and according to Variety, production company Slingshot Global Media struck a deal with "Nordic producer" Tomas Backstrom to develop the new series about a murder mystery on the North Shore area of Lake Superior.

The news comes a week before the debut of the second season of FX's critically acclaimed "Fargo" TV saga. Like the first season, the story takes place in and around Minnesota and follows a cast of characters embroiled in a bloody criminal plot, the official website indicates.

As for the more appropriately named "Minnesota," it's an adaptation of "The Minnesota Trilogy," a series of novels by Norwegian novelist Vidar Sundstol, the Minnesota Film and TV Board tells BringMeTheNews.

There is no word on when the series will go into production, or whether any stars are attached yet.

'Scandinavian Noir meets Minnesota Noir'

The board told BringMeTheNews the books were translated into English by the University of Minnesota Press, which says the plot revolves around a U.S. Forestry officer who stumbles upon a murdered Norwegian tourist and finds himself uncovering his community's dark past.

The story is set in the Cook County towns of Tofte and Schroder, the film board notes.

The U of M Press website describes the books, the first of which is called "The Land of Dreams," as "Scandinavian noir meets Minnesota noir."

According to a film board official, they've been "in conversation" with producer Thomas Backstrom for years, as he's tried to bring the story to the small screen.

Now that he's reached a production deal with Slingshot, the agency says, Backstrom "will most likely solidify his plan to visit Minnesota for a (location) scout," meaning the series could be shot here – unlike Fargo, which is filmed primarily in Canada.

Meanwhile, word broke last year that an HBO-produced drama series called "Stillwater," about a New York cop who relocates to Minnesota, was in the works.

Not much is known about the show, but the film board says it's talking with HBO and that the project is "still in development."
