Minnesota woman severely injured while sledding saved 3-year-old's life
A 20-year-old Coon Rapids woman was injured in a sledding accident when she braced for impact to protect her 3-year-old nephew.
According to a GoFundMe page, Maeghan Skog was sledding with her nephew on March 3 when they lost control and careened toward a line of trees at Knox Hill in Coon Rapids. Skog turned her body to protect her nephew and suffered extensive injuries as a result of slamming into a tree.
Her injuries:
- 2 skull fractures
- bleeding around her brain
- severe concussion
- broken jaw
- 8 fractured ribs
- fractured shoulder blade
Doctors believe Skog saved her nephew's life.
On Knox Hill's Facebook page there are videos from sledders that show how easy it is to lose control and speed towards the trees.
Skog's stepfather, Scott Gareis, told KSTP that he's urging the city of Coon Rapids to install a fence to separate sledders from the tree line, a solution that the city it is considering, according to Fox 9.
Skog still has rubber bands holding her jaw shut, she wrote on Facebook on Wednesday, but she says she's finally out of the hospital and recovering at her mom's house in Zimmerman.
Knox Hill is part of Wintercrest Park, a 20-acre outdoor recreational area just south of Hwy. 10 in Coon Rapids.
