Minnesotan's BWCA photo a finalist in Smithsonian contest

An image entitled "Paddling to Sunrise" has propelled a northeastern Minnesota photographer into the finals of the Smithsonian's 12th annual photo contest.

And while there are 10 finalists in each of six categories, Dawn LaPointe's photo taken in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness was the first one mentioned in the Smithsonian's announcement, which includes this quote from Dawn:

"The silhouette of the canoeist effortlessly gliding along the lake illustrates the solitude and serenity we cherish in the American wilderness."

The photo is a finalist in the Americana category.

The canoeist pictured is Gary Fiedler, LaPointe's husband and business partner in Radiant Spirit Gallery, where copies of "Paddling to Sunrise" can be purchased.

As explained on the gallery's Facebook page, online voting for the Smithsonian's Reader's Choice winner continues through March 30 here.

You can also find more of LaPointe's work here.

She's no stranger to the Smithsonian. In addition to "Paddling to Sunrise" being its Photo of the Day on Dec. 4, LaPointe's "Sunset Paddle" was chosen by a jury last year to be part of the Wilderness Forever exhibit at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History.
