A cinema "for movie lovers, by movie lovers" is opening its first franchise in Minnesota this spring.

Imagine if a bar and grill mated with a movie theater. Their baby would be Alamo Drafthouse Cinema.

And Woodbury will be the site of Minnesota's first Alamo, with an expected opening date in May of 2018, a news release says.

The Texas-based chain was founded by a husband and wife who "were driven by a simple passion for watching movies and enjoying food and beer."

They came up with a movie theater concept where patrons could order food and drinks from servers who quietly attend to them throughout the film.

A 3-day 'Elf' screening party? Sure!

While the Twin Cities metro area already has some booze-and-food theaters (ShowPlace Icon Theaters at West End, Uptown Theater, and New Hope Cinema Grill, to name a few), the Alamo brand is also known for its unique programming and high-profile special events.

Along with new releases, Alamo screens indie flicks, cult classics and downright bizarre movies, often accompanied by themed parties and activities.

For example: an Alamo Drafthouse location in San Francisco is gearing up for a three-day screening of Elf that'll feature games, props, a contest and an actual snowball fight.

The brand was nationally recognized in June when it held women-only screenings of Wonder Woman.

Founder Tim League explains more in this video:

More about the first Minnesota location

The Woodbury location will be a nine-screen, full-service theater equipped with 1,000 luxury recliners. An attached bar and restaurant, Vetted Well, will have 32 local beers on tap.

The movie theater is part of a huge redevelopment project at the Woodbury Lakes shopping center.
