OK so I don’t know about you but I love buying things that truly make me happy!
I’m talking about buying a glazed donut when you make that morning stop for coffee and it’s still warm and the glaze is so sweet! Or how about tickets to Twins Home Opener and you get to have a nice cold beer while basking in the sun on a chilly spring day but you’re on PTO so life is good.
These things might seem small but they are what keeps me happy and it adds a bit of sparkle to the mundane routines that we can find ourselves stuck in.
But you don’t get to just spend that money without asking yourself if you can afford it. OK, maybe the donut was a bad example but don’t you want a donut now?
Let’s take Home Opener for an example. When you think about getting tickets, buying food and drinkies while you are there, maybe you need a babysitter or have to take time off of work, is it worth it?
And maybe you avoid going out to eat that week to cushion your spending money for the big day or you pick up an extra shift to be sure you have enough cash. But you can make it work, right?
What if there was an easier way? What if we actually planned ahead and saved money for these things? Not only are we making room in our calendars, closets and cupboards for the things that matter, we are ensuring we are experiencing more of what we love!
Putting it into action:
Step 1 - list out everything this year you want to be sure to save money for
Step 2 - figure out how much money you need to save a month
Step 3 - include these categories into your budget and save each month
I love this little savings hack for things I love and creating space in my life to enjoy the mundane. Going on vacation shouldn’t be the highlight of your week, month, year or whatever, the small things should count too. Just make room for them!
