Mpls. Institute of Arts sets new attendance record

The Minneapolis Institute of Arts celebrated a new attendance record Sunday with a special greeting for this 600,000th visitor in the past fiscal year, the Star Tribune reports.

The visitor was greeted by the MIA's staff, which included a country-western song by guitarist Steven Lang.

The previous attendance record for the MIA was set in fiscal 2002-2003, as Egyptian, Picasso and American landscape art shows attracted 599,834 to the museum.

And MIA will have plenty of time to build on this year's record. The fiscal year 2012-2013 ends June 30.

Among the notable displays this year that drew big crowds were: "China's Terracotta Warriors" (146,507 visitors) and "Rembrandt in America" (107,090 visitors).

Among the big shows coming next year are "Matisse: Masterworks from the Baltimore Museum of Art," the Pioneer Press reports.

Set for Feb. 23 through May 18, 2014, the exhibit will feature approximately 80 works from famed 20th century French artist Henri Matisse, including paintings, sculpture and works on paper.
