New Cirque du Soleil show 'Amaluna' to play big top at MOA
Cirque du Soleil is returning to the Twin Cities this fall with its latest production "Amaluna," the MOA announced Monday.
The show will premiere Sept. 26 under the blue-and-yellow Big Top at Mall of America in the mall's north parking lot, and runs through Oct. 20.
Tickets go on sale June 7.
A description of the show from the press release:
"Amaluna" invites the audience to a mysterious island governed by Goddesses and guided by the cycles of the moon. Their queen, Prospera, directs her daughter’s coming-of-age ceremony in a rite that honors femininity, renewal, rebirth and balance which marks the passing of these insights and values from one generation to the next.
In the wake of a storm caused by Prospera, a group of young men land on the island, triggering an epic, emotional story of love between Prospera’s daughter and a brave young suitor. But theirs is a love that will be put to the test. The couple must face numerous demanding trials and overcome daunting setbacks before they can achieve mutual trust, faith and harmony.

The show, directed by Tony Award-nominated Broadway director Diane Paulus, "Amaluna" held its world premiere Montreal in April 2012.
"Amaluna" -- which features 48 artist from 15 different countries -- is a groundbreaking production for Cirque du Soleil in that its cast is 70 percent female and band is 100 percent female.
"'Amaluna' is a tribute to the work and voice of women," director of creation Fernand Rainville said in the press release. "The show is a reflection on balance from a woman’s perspective."
Paulus added that the show "is less about feminism and more about reconnecting to our world in a different way."
