A different sort of Paul Bunyan tale will be stomping its way into Minnesota theaters this summer, Minnesota Brown reports.

"Axe Giant: The Wrath of Paul Bunyan" is a new horror/creature feature from director Gary Jones ("Boogeyman 3"). The filmmakers are promising to bring the movie to several dozen theaters in the state, as well as Wisconsin, Michigan and nearby regions.

According to the production, the film follows young adults at a first-time offenders' boot camp who "discover the legend of the giant lumberjack Paul Bunyan is real, but is much more horrifying than they could have imagined."

Among the film's stars are B-movie legends Dan Haggerty (TV's Grizzly Adams) and Joe Estevez -- the brother of Martin Sheen and uncle of Charlie Sheen and Emilo Estevez.

In the trailer for the "Axe Giant The Wrath of Paul Bunyan," the film warns, "Deep in the woods, the legend lives ... but the stories were wrong."

The filmmakers appear to be willing to play "Axe Giant" just about anywhere, saying in a press release, "You can bring it to your movie club, lumberjack camp, movie theater, beer hall, town with giant statues of Paul and Babe the Blue Ox, and other off beat places around the upper Midwest."

Interested parties can suggest a screening at the film's website. The first public showing has already been set for June 5 in Minneapolis.

"Axe Giant: The Wrath of Paul Bunyan" has already won the approval of B-movie king Bruce Campbell, the star of the original "Evil Dead" trilogy.

According to the production, Campbell, who recently produced the hit remake of "Evil Dead," raved, "I enjoyed the hell out of it!"

If you prefer a kinder, gentler giant, Bring Me The News' Don Shelby will be voicing the role for "Paul Bunyan," a VocalEssence production at Ted Mann Concert Hall in Minneapolis Friday and Saturday.
