'Newsapalooza' to look at lighter side of Twin Cities broadcasting

A lighter look at TV broadcasting in the Twin Cities is on tap for Thursday night at a special event in Columbia Heights, the Pioneer Press reports.

"Newsapalooza: An Evening of History and Humor," to be hosted by Tom Oszman and Jack Stahlmann at the Heights Theater, will feature "rare, obscure and humorous" local media and culture clips from Oszman's collection.

Oszman is the brainchild behind TCMediaNow, a website that features classic Twin Cities television moments. In addition to clips and bloopers, the evening will include a panel featuring TV and radio luminaries including Stan Turner, Ron Rosenbaum, T.D. Mischke, Robb Lear, Neil Murray, Steve Carroll and Brian Lambert.

Oszman tells the Pioneer Press that the "station promos from the '80s are so over-the-top funny. There's some pretty funny stuff I think people are going to enjoy."

In addition to his work on TCMediaNow, Oszman has provided video for college courses, documentaries and people looking for certain coverage of an event, the paper says.

He also started hosting the weekly radio show, "Flashback Twin Cities," on KLBB-AM in 2012, where he's interviewed such local media stalwarts as Ron Magers, Pat Miles, Bud Kraehling and Barry ZeVan.

Proceeds from the "Newsapalooza" event will go toward purchasing equipment and preserving videos, the Pioneer Press says. TCMediaNow is a nonprofit organization.
