"White Earth," a documentary about the North Dakota oil boom, was nominated for an Academy Award.

The 19-minute film was nominated for documentary short subject. The other nominees include: "Crisis Hotline: Veterans Press 1," "Joanna," "Our Curse" and "The Reaper."

In "White Earth," documentary filmmaker J. Christian Jensen explores the themes of innocence, home and the American Dream as he tells the story of the oil boom through the eyes of three children and their immigrant mother, who are braving a cruel and long North Dakota winter.

This is Jensen's first Academy Award nomination.

"White Earth," which was released in January 2014, was screened at several film festivals and won several awards. It can be streamed online here for $3.99.

"Birdman" and "The Grand Budapest Hotel" lead the Oscar nominations with nine apiece. The Washington Post notes "Selma," the biopic about Martin Luther King Jr., was the"most obvious snub" despite being nominated for best picture and best original song.

Among the other films that didn't get a nomination was "The Lego Movie," but the director wasn't too worried about it:

No nomination for "The Lego Movie" also made BuzzFeed's list of the 17 biggest surprises at this year's nominations.

The 87th Academy Awards will air on ABC Feb. 22.
