The end is in sight for the four-year 35@94 reconstruction project in south Minneapolis, but there's one more weekend of major closures to endure.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation will close down I-35W between I-94 south of downtown Minneapolis and the crosstown Hwy. 62.
The closure goes into effect at 10 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday, with drivers diverted via I-394, Hwy. 100 and Hwy. 62.
There will also be closures of the ramps from I-94 eastbound to I-35W northbound, and 5th Avenue to I-35W northbound.
It comes as MnDOT wraps up work on the long-awaited I-35W and I-94 improvements, which will include a wider ramp connecting northbound I-35W and westbound I-94, which was previously a cause of significant rush-hour backups.
MnDOT says that the work should be completed enough for all lanes to be opened by September 10, while a new MnPASS lane on I-35W south should open even sooner, potentially by the end of July.
