Clearly there's a hot market for guitars played by Minnesota musicians.

A guitar Bob Dylan played at notable concerts in the 1970s sold at auction for nearly $400,000 this weekend.

According to the listing from Heritage Auctions, the 1963 Martin D-28 was only the second Dylan guitar to ever go to auction. An anonymous buyer paid $396,500 for the instrument on Saturday – nearly $100,000 more than the auction house had anticipated.

Dylan played the acoustic guitar during his set at George Harrison’s Concert for Bangladesh in New York City in 1971 and during his Rolling Thunder Revue tour from October 1975 to May 1976, Heritage Auctions said.

In a video promoting the guitar, Consignment Director for Heritage Auctions Mike Gutierrez said Dylan was invited to play at the Concert for Bangladesh, but never responded.

Hmm, sound familiar? That's kind of what happened when Dylan won the Nobel Prize last year.

"So he just showed up at Madison Square Garden, out of nowhere, with this guitar, and played a short set with George Harrison, Leon Russell, and Ringo Starr," Gutierrez said.

In 1977, Dylan decided to perform solely with Gibson guitars. He sold the Martin for $500 to his guitar tech Larry Cragg.

Heritage Auctions said the original purchase receipt was included with the guitar, and that the instrument hadn't been played in all the years since.

The only other Dylan guitar to ever go to auction was sold in 2013. The singer-songwriter's sunburst Fender Stratocaster from the 1965 Newport Folk Festival went for nearly a million dollars.
