Sylvan Esso have a serious following in Minnesota, as evidenced by last summer when they sold out First Avenue on consecutive nights.
They played to another sell out crowd on Friday, this time at the Surly Brewing Festival Field on the grounds of its sprawling destination brewpub in Minneapolis.
The electro-pop duo of Amelia Meath (vocals) and Nick Sanborn (production) met in North Carolina, though Sanborn was born in Minneapolis and raised in Wisconsin.
His parents were among the 5,500-strong crowd at Surly, with Sanborn fittingly dedicating their debut single, "Hey Mami," to them.
Further stops along their growing back catalog included "Die Young," "Coffee," and "Signal."
They're the second band to play Surly's Festival Field this year, following Spoon and Grizzly Bear last month. Courtney Barnett headlines the stage tonight (Saturday, July 21), tickets for which are still available.
