Pioneering Minnesota brewery to close after 21 years

The St. Paul pub was far ahead of the Minnesota brewery boom
Publish date:

Though Great Waters Brewing Co. has been a mainstay of the Minnesota craft beer scene – and downtown St. Paul – for decades, its owners have decided to close up shop for good.

The brewery and restaurant made the announcement with "a heavy heart and sadness" on its Facebook page on Saturday:

Its last day of business will be Sunday, Nov. 18.

It's not clear why the brewery has decided to call it quits, but as the Growler points out, the market has become flooded in the wake of the 2011 taproom bill, with four breweries and pubs opening in downtown St. Paul in the last six years alone.

In other words, competition from a booming brewery scene – which has expanded to around 150 breweries, Great Waters notes – may have been a factor.

Great Waters first opened in 1997, and is described by Growler as Minnesota's oldest brewpub.
