Pohlad-produced film to have world premiere at Toronto Film Festival

The latest film from Oscar-nominated producer Bill Pohlad will be unveiled at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, The Associated Press reports.

The film -- which chronicles the true-life story of Solomon Northrup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man in the pre-Civil War Era United States who was abducted from upstate New York and sold into slavery in the deep South -- will hold its world premiere at the festival in the Special Presentation category.

The Toronto International Film Festival runs from Sept. 5 to 15. The Hollywood Reporter has a slideshow of the films showing at the festival.

Bill Pohlad, one of the three sons of late Twins owner Carl Pohlad, is producing the film with Brad Pitt, who starred in the Pohlad-produced "Tree of Life." That film earned Pohlad an Oscar nomination for Best Picture as one of the film's producers.

Pitt also stars in "12 Years a Slave," along with Michael Fassbender, Paul Giamatti, Benedict Cumberbatch and Alfre Woodard.

The trailer for the film debuted last week.

Analyzing how the festival usually serves as a springboard for films with hopes for Oscar aspirations, Deadline Hollywood questioned the absence of Minnesota natives Joel and Ethan Coen's folk music tale "Inside Llewyn Davis" from the lineup.

The film earned the Cannes Film Festival's second highest honor -- the Grand Prix -- in May.
