Pop music sensation Carly Rae Jepsen has been tapped to replace Eagan High School alum Laura Osnes in the smash Broadway musical "Cinderella," reports The Hollywood Reporter.

Osnes, who earned a Best Actress in a Musical Tony Award nomination for playing the title role, will complete her year-long run in the role in January, the New York Times says.

The actress, who was born in Burnsville, won a Drama Desk Award for the role. Earlier this month, Broadway.com said Osnes' performance was one of the five best on Broadway in 2013.

"Laura Osnes must be sick of hearing how perfectly cast she is in 'Cinderella.' Yes, Osnes is ideally suited to playing Rodgers & Hammerstein heroines, but that doesn’t diminish the fact that her luminous performance as the fairytale servant-turned-princess was one of the year’s musical highlights," raved Broadway.com.

Jepsen, who burst onto the pop charts in 2012 with her hit "Call Me Maybe," will take over the role for a 12-week run starting Feb. 4.

The singer played the Weesner Family Amphitheater at the Minnesota Zoo in August and sang at the We Day student volunteer event in St. Paul in October.

Jepsen was also featured on the Owatonna-based group Owl City’s track “Good Time” in July 2012, and performed some tunes at the Mall of America a few months later to to help Victoria Justice promote her new movie “Fun Size.”

Last month, Osnes was named spokeswoman for Hennepin Theatre Trust’s SpotLight Musical Theatre Program.

The SpotLight program provides educational support to schools and celebrates students who excel in high school theater.

The HTT says Osnes – a former SpotLight student herself – will return to Minnesota to visit with current program participants and meet with select honorees when they go to New York City as part of a scholarship trip.
