'Positively 4th Street': St. Paul co-names street in honor of Bob Dylan and baseball

St. Paul's 4th Street will now give a nod to one of Minnesota's most notable residents.

The city council voted Wednesday to co-name a section of the street near the new CHS Field "Positively 4th Street" – the name of Dylan's 1965 hit.

Despite "Positively 4th Street" being one of Dylan's least positive songs, council member Dave Thune, who sponsored the resolution, told the Star Tribune renaming the street is a way to make the opening of the St. Paul Saints' new home "a positive development for the citizens of St. Paul" that adds "to the positive experiences of fans and visitors."

Although Dylan is from Hibbing in northern Minnesota – and there's debate about what "4th Street" the singer is referring to in his song – Thune says he played in St. Paul on numerous occasions.

That includes a few sold-out shows at Midway Stadium, the Saints' former home. And he has toured extensively at minor league baseball parks across the country, MPR News notes.

Mike Veeck, a co-owner of the Saints, attended the meeting Wednesday, telling the city council he won't be asking for another street (Prince Street) near CHS Field to be renamed for a Minnesota icon, the Pioneer Press says.

Last year, the city voted to co-name part of Franklin Avenue after St. Paul blues singer and guitarist Dave Ray – he was among the artists who influenced Dylan, the Star Tribune notes.
