Minnesota nanny rocks the house on 'The Voice'

She had tough competition, but nanny-rocker Kat Perkins from Minneapolis won in the first night of battle rounds on NBC's "The Voice" Monday.

Team Adam Levine paired Perkins and Patrick Thomson, of Festus, Missouri, for a duet on Kenny Loggin's "Whenever I Call You Friend." He matched the two together because they are both powerhouse vocalists, Wet Paint says. See video of the duet here.

Coach Blake Shelton said Perkins hit the big notes with more ease. Coach Usher agreed, while Shakira was pulling for Thomson. Levine ended up going with his "gut" and chose Perkins as the winner, the Pioneer Press says.

Luckily for Thomson, he wasn't eliminated – Shakira snatched him for her team, KARE 11 says.

Perkins, 33, grew up on a farm in North Dakota where she was part of a country western review show and traveled the country as a yodeling cowgirl. In 2003, she made the switch to rock music, and at one time her band opened for Bon Jovi. She ended up leaving the music business for awhile and now works as a nanny for an Edina family. She currently lives in Minneapolis.

This is her first time going solo, according to her bio on "The Voice" website. During the blind auditions, she wowed the coaches with a rendition of Fleetwood Mac's "Gold Dust Woman."

The show airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 7 p.m.
