By the sound of the reviews, Prince should do this TV thing more often.
Several national media outlets switched on FOX Sunday night for the Minnesota music icon's much-ballyhooed turn as himself in the post-Super Bowl episode of the hit sitcom "New Girl."
E! Online dubbed Prince the "ultimate relationship guru" in the episode, where he taught Jess (Zooey Deschanel) about the concept of love after Nick (Jake Johnson) uttered the "L-Word" to her for the first time – and she couldn't bring herself to respond.
The website summed up Prince's appearance on the show by referring to a line near the end of the episode where Jess says, "Prince is magic."
"After tonight's episode, we think so too," E! Online said.
MTV heaped praise on Prince's acting abilities, saying he "made doves cry (with happiness)." The outlet even lauded his simple introduction to Jess (Zooey Deschanel) and Nick (Jake Johnson), when he said, "Hi, I'm Prince."
MTV also dug Prince's counseling of Jess over pancakes, demanding she finish them no matter how full she was. The site also loved how he "dressed Jess up in a gown with an attached cape and accessorized it with a sparkly circlet," "totally schooled Jess in ping pong" and "had a cosmic connection with a butterfly."
The episode also featured a new song from the Purple One, called "PretzelBodyLogic."
Locally, the Star Tribune also praised Prince, as music critic Jon Bream started his review with a slam of the Super Bowl-winless Vikings.
"Prince apparently is Minnesota’s only purple person who can deliver on Super Bowl Sunday," Bream wrote.
While FOX is bound to repeat the episode, if fans can't wait to relive it, they can read scene-by-scene details from Entertainment Weekly. Otherwise, if you're patient, FOX online and Hulu Plus will allow you to watch the episode for free starting a week from now.
While critics loved the "New Girl" episode, FOX will find out the true success of Prince's high-profile appearance when the overnight ratings for the TV networks come out Monday.
