Acclaimed Minneapolis alternative rockers The Replacements are among the nominees for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall Fame in 2014, Rolling Stone reports.

The nominees were announced by Rock Hall organizers Tuesday night.

The nomination for The Replacements comes after an unexpected set of reunion gigs for the band at RiotFest concerts in Toronto, Chicago and Denver.

The Toronto gig was the first for The Replacements since the band quietly disappeared after a July 4, 1991 show.

Also among the 16 nominees are singers Linda Ronstadt, Cat Stevens and Peter Gabriel; alternative rockers Nirvana; rock duo Hall and Oates; metal band KISS; and classic rockers, Deep Purple, Yes and The Zombies.

Rappers NWA and LL Cool J are also on the ballot.

Voting on the nominations runs through Dec. 10. The inductees are expected to be announced later that month.

Nominations for the Rock Hall are voted on by 600 music industry professionals. Artists aren't eligible to be nominated until 25 years after their first commercial recording.

The Los Angeles Times says Ronstadt's nomination -- her first -- comes 20 years after she became eligible for the honor.

Don Henley, who once backed-up Ronstadt with other musicians who would go on to former classic country rockers the Eagles, recently called Ronstadt's absence from the Rock Hall "a travesty."

In addition to the formal selection process, the Rock Hall is offering an online fan poll, where they can vote for five nominees they believe to be "most deserving of induction." The top five vote-getters in the fan poll will be on a "fan's ballot" that will be tallied among the other ballots to determine the 2014 inductees.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held in April.
