"The Interview" will be released in select theaters Thursday, including several in Minnesota.

Sony Pictures Entertainment announced Tuesday a limited theatrical release for the Seth Rogan/James Franco comedy, The Associated Press says, which has a storyline involving the attempted assassination of North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un.

On Wednesday, Sony decided to make the movie available on digital channels, including YouTube.

Sony CEO Michael Lynton said in a statement that the company is releasing the movie so it "reaches the largest possible audience," the Hollywood Reporter notes.

The movie will be played in at several Minnesota theaters this week. Jesse Bishop of the Film Society of Minneapolis/St. Paul told KSTP it will show "The Interview" on one screen at St. Anthony Main Theatre in Minneapolis.

There aren't any confirmed showtimes on the theater's website, but KSTP says it plans to show it twice on Christmas Day, and once a day from Friday through New Year's Eve, with a "full run" beginning New Year's Day.

According to the Star Tribune, "The Interview" will also play at Cambridge Cinema 5 and North Branch Cinema Theater north of the Twin Cities, and Quarry Cinema in Cold Spring. The Wehrenberg Rochester Galaxy 14 Cine will also show the controversial film, according to ABC6 News.

MPR reports the Fargo Theater in Fargo plans to screen it too.

Landmark Theaters, which has a location in Minneapolis, says it won't release the film so it can honor commitments to other movies it has already booked, the Hollywood Reporter notes.

Sony had initially canceled the release of the film due to threats from hackers, which sparked outrage, including from President Barack Obama. The movie also prompted an international incident with North Korea.
