Rochester bar targeted in lawsuit by major music licensing co.

Whiskey Bones Roadhouse in Rochester, Minn. is one of 12 bars and restaurants across the country being targeted in a lawsuit filed by music licensing company Broadcast Music, Inc., or BMI.

According to TMZ, BMI claims the small-town bars have been playing their songs without paying a licensing fee. TMZ says the company is entitled to $150,000 for every unlicensed song played, which would likely put the establishments out of business.

BMI took issue with TMZ's report and requested a retraction.

According to a BMI spokesperson, the company is not "entitled" to $150,000 in fees although it's the maximum penalty a copyright owner can recover per infringement under federal law.

BMI issues licenses to various users of music including nightclubs, bars and restaurants. According to their website, the company represents at least 7.5 million compositions.

FOX 9 reports Whisky Bones wasn't available for comment Wednesday.

In April, the popular Rochester bar made local headlines after a number of violent outbursts got the attention of the city council, KAAL reported.
