Sculpture Garden at Walker Art Center to get $10M upgrade

The Minneapolis Sculpture Garden at the Walker Art Center will be getting a $10 million facelift once plans are finalized, Minnesota Public Radio News reports.

Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board Commissioner Anita Tabb tells MPR News the upgrades will include work on the Sculpture Garden's infrastructure to tackle the facility's drainage problems.

Tabb says "water is a very, very, destructive element and it's really taken its toll in the garden."

The Minneapolis Sculpture Garden opened 25 years ago and has since reportedly attracted 8 million visitors.

The Star Tribune says the landscape architecture firm Oslund and Associates, in association with Snow Kreilich Architects, is expected to be chosen for the renovation of the Sculpture Garden.

The newspaper says $8.5 million for the project came from the Minnesota State Legislature, while the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization is providing up to $1.5 million for new storm water management systems.

The architectural team is expected to be recommended to a Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board committee Wednesday, and the full board will take up the action to approve the team Sept. 3.

If the team is approved as expected, community input meetings will begin in October and designs will be drafted over the winter, the Star Tribune says. Construction upgrades on the Sculpture Garden are expected begin in the summer of 2015.
