That shaking you felt in Mankato? Not an earthquake

Earthquakes can happen in Minnesota – they just don't happen very often.

Sorry Mankato, that wasn't an earthquake.

The ground throughout the area shook just after 11 a.m. Tuesday, and it had people wondering if they'd just felt an earthquake.

It also freaked some people out.

While others made light of the situation.

 So what was it?

It wasn't an earthquake at all. The City of Mankato said it was a blast at the quarry at 900 Cleveland Ave. at 11:04 a.m., which sent a vibration through most of the city.

"It is suspected that due to weather, overpressure may have caused a 'pressure wave,'" the city said.

The U.S. Geological Survey (they're the ones who measure how strong earthquakes are) did pick up the quarry blast, listing it as a 2.8 magnitude – something of that magnitude is usually felt, but doesn't typically do any major damage.

Mankato officials say no damage or injuries were reported, and they've suspended all blasts at the quarry until further notice while they look into it.

Earthquakes aren't common, but can happen

And just so you know, earthquakes don't happen often in Minnesota, and this USGS map shows the chance of us experiencing a strong quake is pretty low.

The Minnesota Geological Survey said in 2014 there have been 20 recorded earthquakes in Minnesota since 1860, with most considered minor.

You can check out a map of Minnesota earthquakes, quarry blasts and mine explosions that have been registered by the USGS over the years here.
