Shopko to close all of its remaining stores – including 22 in Minnesota

The Green Bay-based chain had been struggling to stay afloat.
Publish date:

Shopko, the Wisconsin-based department store chain that is a familiar sight in greater Minnesota cities, is closing all of its remaining stores.

The announcement was made Monday after several recent store closure announcements, with the company in February having already identified 16 stores in Minnesota that would close between March and May.

Now the remaining full-size Shopko and Shopko Hometown stores in Minnesota will follow, closing their doors by June 16 at the latest.

"This is not the outcome that we had hoped for when we started our restructuring efforts," said Russ Steinhorst, Shopko CEO.

"We want to thank all of our teammates for their hard work and dedication during their time at Shopko."

The company, which was unable to find a buyer to save its stores, will start winding down its remaining outlets beginning this week, with WLUK in Wisconsin reporting an estimated 5,000 workers will be affected.
