Six months after Gabe Grunewald's death, her husband is buying beers in her honor

Justin Grunewald is covering the bar tab at a Minneapolis brewery next week.

It's been a heartbreaking year for those who knew and loved Gabe Grunewald, for none more so than her husband, Justin.

The professional runner and Perham native died in June at the age of 32 following a decade-long battle with cancer.

During her all-too-brief life, Gabe proved an inspirational figure to many, and raised awareness and funding for rare cancer research through her charitable foundation, Brave Like Gabe.

In that spirit, Justin Grunewald will hold a fundraiser for the charity at Modist Brewing in the Minneapolis North Loop, between 2-6 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 29.

He will cover the whole beer tab for the brewery during those four hours, with Modist donating $1 per pint sold, with patrons asked to make a small donation to Brave Like Gabe.

"If you don’t have the means or you’ve had a crummy year and need a beer, please have one on GG and me," he wrote on Instagram.

Justin writes that some of his favorite memories with Gabe were running "followed by a brewery wherever we were."

"The biggest thing I realized this year is that I took time for granted," he writes. "No matter what we do, we are all going to eventually run out of time on this earth.

"You can’t take the money you make with you, so put it towards something with meaning, now. A trip, an experience, a sunset, a mountain, a great 4-pack of beer, the best coffee you can find.

"I’m so grateful for all the support each of you have given @bravelikegabe this year, so my hope for this event is to be surrounded by good people, good beer, and all kinds of hope to close out a terrible, but wonderful, year for the foundation."

You can find Modist Brewing at 505 N. 3rd St.
