The Happy Gnome, a favorite Twin Cities destination, has been named one of the best beer bars in the country by the online site Thrillist.
Thrillist, which recommends restaurants, bars and entertainment spots in two dozen cities in the U.S., published a list of what it considers the 33 best beer bars -- what they call bars for "serious beer people: places where home brewers flock for inspiration and where the beer world’s best artisans roll out their experimental and hard-to-find suds."
Here's what they said about the Happy Gnome:
"This beloved St. Paul destination offers 76 lines of craft beer inside a former fire station from the late 1800s. They're staunch supporters of the local craft scene, which makes the many brews from Surly, Fulton, and Steel Toe a given. But they're also pulling from the country's best breweries, like Lagunitas, Odell, and Clown Shoes. Visit in the summer to take advantage of the “Minnesota patio experience” and soak up the sun, or in March for the Firkin Fest that features 30-40 breweries, both local and national."
The rest of the recommended bars are scattered around the country in nearly two dozen states. Three of them are in Texas, four are in California, and there are two each in Chicago, Denver, New York City and Portland, Oregon.
The Happy Gnome is located on Selby Street in the Cathedral Hill neighborhood of St. Paul. This isn't the first time it's been recognized for its focus on craft beer -- for the past two years it's also been on the list of the top 100 beer bars compiled by Draft Magazine. Republic, which has two locations in Minneapolis, was also on Draft Magazine's list.
