After 40 years of serving tea, borscht and pastries to the masses, the Russian Tea House in St. Paul is closing down.

Owners Linda and Nikolai Alenov have become an institution over their decades-long tenure at University and Wheeler, but it'll come to an end this weekend.

"We're so very grateful for all your warm wishes and concern for us and we consider ourselves extremely lucky to have been blessed with such a great group of customers in our 40-year Tea House adventure!" they wrote on Facebook.

"You've all been family from the get go... but now indeed we do have to go. It feels like leaving family."

The pair said they'd told their customers that their retirement plan was "to to work until one of us dropped," adding that "although we haven't quite 'dropped,' alas we are teetering."

The last two days of service at the tea house will be this Friday and Saturday between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The Alenovs say they'll be selling Russian tea cakes, borscht, piroshki, stroganoff, Napoleon torte and chocolate poppy rolls until they're all sold out.
