State Fair stakes out middle ground on selfie sticks

You can still bring your selfie stick to the Minnesota State Fair this year, just be careful where you use it.

The new State Fair policy posted in its visitor guide bans the sticks on rides and at the grandstand or other stages.

A Fair spokeswoman tells MPR News the rule of thumb is that anything that requires a ticket or has a seated audience should be a stick-free zone.

So midway ride photos on a stick are now a no-no.

But if you need that group shot of your whole posse cruising the fairgrounds, Pronto Pups in hand ... you can knock your selfie out.

A growing number of theme parks around the country – including Walt Disney World – have banned selfie sticks, citing safety hazards and interference with other guests.

In Iowa last week Adventureland, a park outside of Des Moines, nixed the sticks but the Iowa State Fair is still welcoming them, KCCI reports.

Even though the tide seems to be turning against them at theme parks, selfie sticks may have an upside for family establishments like a fair.

The photos snapped with a stick are usually headed for social media. Eric Olson, an event management professor at Iowa State University, tells the Cedar Rapids Gazette that provides a great free promotion for the locale.
