Minnesota is one of the drunkest states in the country

Not nearly as bad as North Dakota and Wisconsin, though.

When it comes to excessive drinking, only a handful of states do it more than the people of Minnesota.

24/7 Wall Street found that approximately 1 in every 5 Minnesotans aged 21 and above consume excessive amounts of alcohol, which is defined by binge drinking or heavy drinking, both of which have different definitions for men and women.

  • Binge drinking: 4+ drinks a day for women, 5+ for men.
  • Heavy drinking: 8+ drinks a week for women, 15+ for men.

In Minnesota, the data shows that 21.1 percent of adults drink excessively, with Mankato and North Mankato earning the top spot for the "drunkest metro area."

Minnesota is well above the national average of 18 percent and ranks as the "6th drunkest state" in the U.S., while the five states ahead of us include a few neighbors.

  1. North Dakota - 24.7 percent
  2. Wisconsin - 24.5 percent
  3. Alaska - 22.1 percent
  4. Montana - 21.8 percent
  5. Illinois - 21.2 percent

Despite our apparent love for alcohol, Minnesota's premature death rate – described as people who die before age 75 – is the lowest in the country, with just 262 deaths per every 100,000 residents.

The CDC says excessive alcohol use claims nearly 90,000 lives each year in the United States.

It's a bit surprising that Wisconsin isn't No. 1 on the list. Just last year, 24/7 Wall Street listed the 100 drunkest cities in America and 10 of them were from Wisconsin, including most of the top 10
