Nearly 20 years after it came out in theaters, director Terry Gilliam's acclaimed science fiction movie "12 Monkeys" may be adapted for the small screen, The Hollywood Reporter reports.

Gilliam -- a Medicine Lake native -- directed the 1995 film, a post-apocalyptic thriller starring Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt. The project is being eyed for a 90-minute pilot by cable channel Syfy, which would lead to a series, THR reports.

Original "12 Monkeys" producer Charles Roven is connected to the TV project, but it's unclear what involvement Gilliam will have, if any.

Gilliam is perhaps best known as the only American member of the British comedy troupe Monty Python. But he's also carved out an impressive career as director, including such films as "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" (co-directed with Terry Jones), "Time Bandits," "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" and "The Brothers Grimm."

He also directed "The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus," the last film to star late actor Heath Ledger.

In the film version of "12 Monkeys," Willis stars as James Cole, a convict sent back in time to collect information about a man-made virus released by the Army of Twelve Monkeys, which was used to wide out most of Earth's population.

The film earned Pitt an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
