T Bone Burnett wants to be a Coen brother

Legendary music producer T Bone Burnett has developed such a close working relationship with Minnesota-born filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen that he wouldn't mind being a Coen brother himself.

In a recent interview for the Coens' new movie "Inside Llewyn Davis," Burnett said he didn't mind that I referred to him as "the third Coen brother."

"I hope they'll adopt me eventually," Burnett told me, laughing. "I've always felt a real kinship with them, really from the first time I saw one of their films. I like their films so much that I actually called them up. We had friends in common and things like that, but I guess you could say this was a fan phone call to them. We talked films and turned into friends from there."

Since that fateful phone call, Burnett has collaborated with the Coens on "The Big Lebowski," "O Brother Where Art Thou?" and "The Ladykillers."

Burnett supervised the music for 1960s folk tale "Inside Llewyn Davis," and co-wrote the peppy tune "Please Mr. Kennedy" with the Coens and Justin Timberlake. The song was inspired by a similar tune from the early '60s.

"Inside Llewyn Davis" expands into more theaters across the country Friday, including an exclusive Twin Cities engagement at Uptown Theatre in Minneapolis. The film received praise this week from both the Pioneer Press and the Star Tribune.

The film opens in theaters nationwide in January.
