Several months after the closure of Muffuletta, its former space in St. Anthony Park is getting a new tenant.
Muffuletta closed in November, ending a 40-year stay as a mainstay of the St. Paul dining scene, of which it was a "game-changer" when it opened in 1977 as it helped kickstart the foodie revolution in the Twin Cities.
Its closure came as a disappointment to regular patrons, but locals will soon see new dining options arrive in the form of Nico's Taco and Tequila Bar.
The restaurant was serving tacos at the St. Anthony Park Parade on Wednesday, and revealed on its Facebook page that this appearance was a precursor to it opening up in the former Muffuletta space at 2260 Como Avenue.
It will be the second Nico's in the Twin Cities, adding to its original location on Hennepin Avenue in Minneapolis' Uptown.
Expect it to be somewhat different from the romantic ambience of Muffuletta, with Nico's bringing its trademark selection of tacos, enchiladas, guacs and salsas – not to mention its gigantic selection of tequilas and cocktails.
