Target admits St. Paul Juneteenth display 'missed the mark'

It featured hot sauce, Kool-Aid and watermelon.

Target says its Juneteenth display at a St. Paul store, which featured hot sauce, Kool-Aid and watermelon, "missed the mark" and it is using this as a "moment of education" for employees.

A video posted to TikTok this week criticizes the Midway Target's display, which sparked complaints that it depicted stereotypes of Black people, and prompted calls on social media for Target to do better.

Target issued a statement on Thursday, June 24, saying

"We want everyone to feel welcome and included at Target and, as part of our commitment to racial equity, we recently recognized Juneteenth as a paid holiday and encouraged our teams to use it as a day of service and education.

"One of our team members created this display to try and teach about Juneteenth, but it missed the mark and we’re sorry that it was insensitive. We’ve taken the display down, talked to the team member who was involved and will use it as a moment of education for our team."

A human resources manager at the store set up the display on a table in the breakroom for the Juneteenth holiday, but it was removed on Tuesday after workers said it was offensive, the Star Tribune reports
