Why Target Field is being recognized as the 'greenest ballpark in America'

Target Field is the only sports venue in the world to earn three different levels of LEED certification.

On Earth Day, Target Field was recognized for its environmental efforts.

The Twins posted to Facebook Saturday saying Target Field is officially LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certified – making it the first sports facility to achieve LEED Gold certification and the only sports venue in the world to earn three different levels of LEED certification.

But what does that even mean?

According to its website, LEED is the "most widely used green building rating system in the world." Any building can be submitted for consideration. Buildings are evaluated and given points based on how green and sustainable they are. From there, the building can get one of four ratings: Certified, Silver, Gold or Platinum.

So the more environmentally friendly a building is, the better its rating.

Target Field's new gold certification is for efficient operations and maintenance. Prior to this, the ballpark earned a silver certification in 2011 for the same thing, and a silver certification in 2010 for new construction.

What makes Target Field so green?

Target Field says that between 2011 and 2016, it's diverted 8,256 tons of waste from landfills. Instead, that trash was recycled, composted or turned into energy.

The facility also has a partnership with Eco-Products so most of its concessions packaging is compostable. Whatever's not compostable can be recycled.

The stadium also purifies and reuses rainwater, and donates tons of food to local charities. For more information, check out this infographic.
