Some songwriters hope to impart pearls of wisdom to their listeners.

But Jack Ohmes says he wanted to convey the confusion – and fear and grief – that a second-grader feels when his mom has cancer.

He's now a high school senior at Mounds Park Academy but the song "Stay With Me" – which is newly available on iTunes – is written from his perspective in the days when his mother, Angie Ohmes, was shuttling between a hospital and the family's Mendota Heights home, trying to beat colon cancer.

Thursday Jack performed "Stay With Me" at Gilda's Place Twin Cities and announced that proceeds from his new single will benefit the Minnetonka organization that helps families fighting cancer.

Jack wrote "Stay With Me" a few years ago, in response to a school assignment to write about an important time in his life, WCCO reports.

Angie Ohmes tells the station she knew nothing about the song until Jack dedicated it to her at a public performance.

Angie tells KARE 11 there wasn't a dry eye in the house after her son first publicly played "Stay With Me."

"From that moment on I knew I could do something special with this song," Jack says.

His father, Mike Ohmes, tells KARE that when the family toured Gilda's Place, Jack decided that was the place he wanted to help.

Gilda's Place provides support particularly for children and teenagers in families coping with cancer. The organization founded by comedian Gilda Radner and her family, opened a Twin Cities chapter in Minnetonka last year.
