The Art Shanty Projects have launched a new membership program

It's to help keep the event free and the artists paid.

The Art Shanty Projects have launched a new membership program to help keep its event free and its artists paid.

Artist-designed shanties have been taking over Minnesota lakes since 2005. They've been on White Bear Lake since 2014. But this coming winter, they'll be on Lake Harriet to be closer to downtown Minneapolis.

With this move, organizers expect to attract more than 25,000 visitors during the four weekends in January and February.

So in order to grow the program, keep the artists paid, and have the event still be completely free to the public, the Art Shanty Projects have started a membership program.

To become a member, you have to pledge at least $25. You get special benefits depending on how much you pledge (you can see the different membership levels here). Members can get a sneak-peak of the shanties as well as invites to exclusive events.

The money goes towards helping the Art Shanty Projects so they don't have to rely so much on public and private grants. As the website notes, those have become less predictable.

The projects emphasize that they really want to make sure artists are fairly compensated for their work, and this will help with that. it also gives fans a chance to share ownership of the program.

You can donate on Kickstarter here.
