The Sioux Chef is picked as restaurant for new Minneapolis park

The restaurant will open along the Mississippi River sometime in 2019.

A restaurant that specializes in Native American cuisine is planned for along the Mississippi River in Minneapolis.

The Sioux Chef will be part of Water Works, a park development project that will overlook St. Anthony Falls and the Stone Arch Bridge, the Minneapolis Parks Foundation announced Monday.

The restaurant will be open year-round and offer a full-service menu, as well as "casual, counter service" for those looking for a quick bite to eat.

The Sioux Chef will be part of the public pavilion that's going to be embedded into the historic remnants of the Bassett and Columbia mills. And The Sioux Chef will work with architects to create places within Water Works to grow native plants that are used in indigenous dishes and medicine.

The Sioux Chef will also have events and educational opportunities to teach people about Native American cultures, their connection to the river, and food.

"We are humbled and grateful for the opportunity to help honor the Indigenous history of Owamni Yamni (Place of Whirlpools). This location has been a sacred site of peace and well-being for the Dakota and Anishinaabe people for millennia,” Dana Thompson, co-owner of The Sioux Chef, said in a statement.

More on Water Works

Water Works will be within the popular Central Mississippi Riverfront Regional Park, which is the birthplace of Minneapolis' milling history and also a spiritual place for indigenous people.

In addition to the restaurant, the pavilion area will feature outdoor spaces for people to gather, a rooftop patio, places for kids to play, and public restrooms.

Construction is expected to begin late next summer, with the mezzanine phase of the project slated to be finished in 2019.
