For the second year in a row, the Mall of America will play host to a large outdoor ice rink this holiday season and winter.

The Skate the Star rink debuted outside the megamall's North Entrance in 2018, with money from skate rentals donated to the Boys &Girls Clubs of the Twin Cities.

Last year it proved so popular that the MOA extended its opening season into mid-February. This helped the mall raise $86,000 for the Boys & Girls Clubs.

This year, Skate the Star will return on Saturday, Dec. 14, and stay open until Feb. 2 at least.

It's free for the public to use, with guests welcome to bring their own skates. Otherwise you can rent a pair for $5, all of which will be donated.

The rink's first year was sponsored by UCare, this year it's being sponsored by Medica and TCF Bank.

"Last year we saw the magic of Minnesota winters come to life through the 23,000 guests who came out to Skate the Star at Mall of America," said Jill Renslow, senior VP of Marketing and Business Development for Mall of America.

"We are thrilled to see thousands more lace up their skates with us this winter season and look forward to partnering with the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Twin Cities once again to help support all the amazing work they do for the community.'

The rink, which is being built by Minnesota Ice, will be constructed using 18,000 gallons of water.
