For only the third time in its 69-year history, you can ski at Lutsen Mountains in May.

Thanks to the snow seen in April, the North Shore ski resort has not yet blown through its snowmaking reserves, and so is able to open the slopes this coming weekend.

And the yang to Lutsen's ying comes in the form of Superior National Golf, which has announced its Mountain 9-hole golf course will open for play beginning this Friday.

Lutsen says that it will be only the third time it's been open for skiing in May, and it's all thanks to the historic snowstorm that hit Minnesota in mid-April.

Although southern Minnesota saw the most snow, the North Shore was nonetheless hit by upwards of a foot of the white stuff.

“We plan our snowmaking to store reserves, so we can remain open through April, anticipating some warm days in late March and early April,” Lutsen marketing director Jim Vick said in a press release.

"With the prolonged winter, we didn’t need to touch those reserves until last week, leaving plenty of snow to ski into May. It is a rare opportunity to blend our seasons where you can ski, fish trout and golf on the same weekend."

Wild Mountain near Taylors Falls is also open for skiing this weekend.
