This beer fest highlights the harvest with fresh hop brews

It's a perfect fest for hop heads.

It's harvest season, and that means fresh hop beers. 

Minneapolis Town Hall Brewery puts on an annual event to mark the hop harvest and celebrate the deliciousness that is juicy, fresh-hopped beer.

This year's Fresh Hop Fest and Fall Beer Showcase is Saturday, Oct. 14 at Town Hall Lanes in Minneapolis from 1-5 p.m. 

About 30 breweries from Minnesota and across the U.S. will be on hand to pour samples of their fresh hop beers and other fall styles, like Oktoberfest, wood-aged, pumpkin and ciders. 

It's $40 for unlimited samples (buy tickets here). The event will also feature live music and food (chicken naan tacos and homemade corn dogs made with fresh hop batter). 

What's a fresh hop beer?

This style of beer uses – you guessed it – fresh hops. 

They're beers that can only be made once a year, during the hop harvest. The hops are picked off the bine right before they're thrown into the brew (instead of using dry hops or dry hop pellets, which is common in most breweries year-round). 

Using fresh hops makes the beer have a brighter, more alive taste, with the flavor and characters from the hops more pronounced, Town Hall brewer Mike Hoops told GoMN last year.

At this year's Fresh Hop Fest, Town Hall will pour its 12th edition of Fresh Hop 100, which features hops from Yakima Valley, Washington, where most of the nation's hops are grown.

And leading up to the event, Town Hall is pouring a variety of hoppy brews at its four locations in the Twin Cities (but remember, when fresh hop beer runs out – it's gone so this list may not be completely accurate.)
