This iconic St. Paul spot just made a global list of 'completely gorgeous' gardens

It was a global list.

Well, you now can describe the gardens at Como Park Zoo & Observatory as "world-class."

Because a popular food, health and travel website says the attraction is one of the nine best free public gardens on the planet.

In the list, which came out Wednesday, Como's gardens – housed in the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory – stand alongside legendary public spaces like London's Hyde Park and Jardin des plantes in Paris, France.

High up at No. 3, it's one of just three U.S. parks to get mentioned – the others being the International Rose Test Garden in Portland, Oregon, and Balboa Park in San Diego, California.

Swirled didn't say how it compiled its "completely gorgeous" list, but aside from the "no admission fees" criterion, scenic beauty seems to have been a major factor.

Full disclosure, though: the author of the Swirled article, Libby Ryan, tells GoMN she's from St. Paul, saying she's "clearly a proud Minnesota native."

It doesn't matter, though, because Como was openly happy to have been included, and ranked so highly:

The gardens, which are best known by the iconic glass "greenhouse," first opened in 1915, and includes one full acre of indoor plants, and three outdoor gardens as well, the city of St. Paul says. It's home to 50,000 plants.

And according to MinnPost, the observatory itself has had quite the history, and is one of the "few remaining Victorian 'crystal palaces.'"
